We're headed back to haunted U.S.S. Hornet on July 11'th, 2009!

We're looking for other folks to accompany us! Having investigated there once before, we are excited to return to this incredible ship.

It would be great for GRI to visit the ship in force and/or guests of GRI to visit as a group! If you are interested, then see below! If interested, we'd like to carpool. Jon can take one in the GRI Mustang and then one more vehicle for another couple of folks.

Let us know if interested in banding together for the drive down!

OVERVIEW OF HORNET'S HISTORY

This July marks the 40th anniversary of the
Apollo 11 mission to the moon, and the successful
recovery by the USS Hornet of the mission’s astronauts-
Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Michael Collins-
and temporary quarantine in the specially designed Airstream trailer/quarantine facility.
Four months later the Hornet recovered the
all-Navy crew of Apollo 12.

The USS Hornet is the largest surviving artifact from these incredible events. Two of the special exhibits include:
Apollo Space Capsule and the Mobile Quarantine Facility
are housed aboard the ship.

Built at Newport News, Virginia, in 1943, the USS Hornet is one of most decorated ships of the US Navy. Achieving numerous battle records and steeped in history, the USS Hornet is a ship of honor, integrity, mystery, and not surprisingly, paranormal activity.

A few highlights from her illustrious career include:

* Under air attack 59 times, she was never hit.

* Her aircraft destroyed 1,410 Japanese aircraft

* Her air groups destroyed or damaged 1,269,710 tons of  enemy shipping.

* 10 HORNET pilots attained "Ace in a Day" status.

* 30 of 42 VF-2 Hellcat pilots were aces.

* Scored the critical first hits in sinking the super battleship YAMATO.

* Earned 9 battle stars for her service in WWII

* One of only nine carries to be honored, she was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for her WWII operations

* Flawlessly recovered the Apollo 11 space capsule and the first men to walk on the moon. A few months later, she also recovered the Apollo 12 capsule and its all-Navy crew; 1969

Other exhibits include Propeller Aircraft:

  • TBM-3E Avenger – WWII torpedo bomber used until the mid-fifties

  • T-28B Trojan – Military trainer used by the U.S. Navy & U.S. Air Force in the 1950s to the early 1980s.

Two of the several Jet Aircrafts on display are the:

  •  FJ-2 Fury – 1950’s swept-wing fighter jet; naval version of the Air Force’s F-86 Sabre
  • TA-4J Skyhawk – trainer from the last aggressor squadron, VC-8

Plus, Helicopters such as:

  • HUP-1 Retriever – 1950’s search and rescue helicopter designed by Piasecki

  • SH-3H Sea King – Apollo recovery helicopter; appeared in the “Apollo 13” movie
